Every larger-than-life creature feature, from King Kong to Godzilla to Jurassic Park, owes a debt to the original Lost World, the granddaddy of giant monster movies. Based on an adventure fantasy by Arthur Conan Doyle, it’s the story of a maverick scientist (Wallace Beery, under a bushy beard) who finds a land that time forgot on a plateau deep within the South American jungles and comes back to London with a captured brontosaur to prove it. His expedition includes Bessie Love, the daughter of an explorer who disappeared on the previous expedition, and big-game hunter Lewis Stone. The ostensible stars of the picture are all upstaged by Willis O’Brien’s dinosaurs, simple models brought to life with primitive stop-motion animation. Hardly realistic by any measure, these pioneering special effects are still a sight to behold, especially the lumbering brontosaur (which receives the most care from O’Brien, both foraging in his jungle and rampaging through the streets of London).
The Lost World was truncated for rerelease in the 1930s and the original negative was subsequntly lost. David Shepard meticulously “rebuilt” the film using material from eight different surviving prints from all over the world, cleaning and restoring along the way. The result, which is 50 percent longer than previously extant prints, is still not complete but closer than any version since its 1925 debut. The difference is not merely in restored scenes but in a rediscovered sense of grace in scenes filled out to their original detail and pace. The film moves and breathes once again like a silent film.
The disc features the choice of an original, modern score by the Alloy Orchestra and a classic orchestral score compiled and conducted by Robert Israel (both enjoyable and effective), 13 minutes of O’Brien’s animation outtakes (including a couple of isolated frames that capture O’Brien manipulating his models), and rudimentary commentary by Arthur Conan Doyle historian Roy Pilot. –Sean Axmaker

The plot advances in fits and starts, which would be forgivable if George had the irreverent charm of Spike Spiegel or the concealed strength of Kenshin Himura. But he’s so cool and understated, he’s neither interesting nor appealing. The transfer to disc is sloppy, with numerous visual artifacts. Tom Selleck’s reliably appealing performance in the title role carries Jesse Stone: Sea Change, the fourth in the series of films based on Robert B. Parker’s novels. His Jesse Stone is one gloomy dude; fired from his job as a detective with the LAPD, unhappily divorced from his wife (with whom he still talks daily on the telephone), and now police chief in a picturesqu but sleepy New England burg ironically called Paradise, Stone has relieved his boredom and general disaffection by taking to the bottle. But things are about to change. First one of the local girls accuses a visiting yachtsman, in town for Racing Week, of rape, an allegation that may or may not be tru (in a scenario straight out of Jaws, when the presence of a shark threatened to ruin a holiday weekend, the tourism-obsessed Paradise town council wants to sweep this one under the rug as swiftly as possible). Then there’s a robbery-murder case dating back a dozen years or more, which Stone at first takes on simply so he’ll have something to do but later becomes a good deal more complicated. Sea Change is a great-looking film, with a lovely setting, gorgeous cinematography, and a golden retriever that can be relied on for adorable reaction shots. But it’s also a TV movie of the week, which in this instance means that it’s almost entirely predictable, with professional but less-than-convincing performances by actors dealing with a script in which the characters simply don’t talk like real people (Kathy Baker and Kohl Sudduth as fellow cops are among the few exceptions). As for Jesse Stone, well, this is Tom Selleck we’re talking about, and drunk or not, he is still thoroughly likable, not to mention a major chick magnet. That alone will be enough to entertain viewers looking for some easy escapism. –Sam Graham

Live in Reno is a solid overview of an admirable career, even if this Gordon Lightfoot is not what he once was. The singer-songwriter, 61 when the 90-minute show was recorded in April 2000, looks gaunt, and his distinctive voice is on the frail side. Still, he has accumulated a remarkable catalog of material over the course of some four decades, and nearly all of the biggies are among the 22 songs performed here by Lightfoot and his four-piece band, from the early classics popularized by other artists (”For Lovin’ Me,” “Early Morning Rain”) to his own best-known hits (”If You Could Read My Mind,” “Sundown,” “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald”). There are no theatrics or flashy production valus, just a group of middle-aged men playing their music–and playing it well.
